Effective control of grape fungal diseases such as powdery mildew, downy mildew and botrytis is critical to profitable table and wine grape production. Given the high stakes for farmers, controlling these diseases typically relies on fixed preventative sppraying that comes at a significant cost to the business as well as the environment.
Grape Compass is a smartphone decision support application for viticulturialists/grape growers. It makes reliable forecasts of fungal disease risks in vineyards, thereby enabling precisely timed and targeted spraying to control powdery mildew, downy mildew and botrytis. It is very easy to use, does not require a weather station and has minimal data inputs. The application was created as a result of rigorous scientific research with the objective to maximize the quantity of high-quality grapes at the lowest business and environmental cost, thereby supporting the farm's long-term sustainability.
